Transfer Twist: Forgotten Wolves Talent Catches Leeds’ Eye
Leeds United are already busy plotting reinforcements after their Championship triumph under Daniel Farke, and one surprising name on their radar is Hugo Bueno of Wolves. It’s not every day that a player who spent last season on loan in the Eredivisie becomes a top target for a newly promoted side, but Leeds’ recruitment team clearly sees something special.
With full-back options such as Junior Firpo likely to depart Elland Road this summer, Farke and his staff must plug a gap on the left side of defence. In my view, turning to a player who excelled abroad makes sense – Bueno brings pace, technical ability and a hunger that Leeds fans will appreciate.
However, the move isn’t straightforward. Feyenoord are desperate to keep Bueno in Rotterdam, and Leeds will have to move fast – and cleverly – if they hope to persuade Wolves to let him go, whether on loan or permanently. The idea that a “forgotten” Wolves defender could become one of the Premier League’s next breakout stars certainly adds a touch of drama to what promises to be an intriguing summer window.
Feyenoord Fight to Keep Hugo Bueno: Can They Win the Transfer Race?
After impressing with 20 appearances and three assists in the Dutch top flight, Hugo Bueno has earned rave reviews from Feyenoord boss Robin van Persie. The former Arsenal and Manchester United forward apparently wants to build his side around the young Spaniard next season, and the club’s hierarchy are reportedly “pulling out all the stops” to extend his stay.
Dutch pundit Martijn Krabbendam even suggested on the Dick Voormekaar Podcast Extra that Feyenoord will do “everything they can” to secure either another loan or a permanent deal for Bueno. From my perspective, that level of determination reflects how highly he’s rated – and it explains why Leeds face stiff competition.
Still, Wolves hold the final cards. If they decide the 21-year-old’s development is best served in England’s top flight, Leeds could swoop. But should Feyenoord seal a deal first, the Whites will have to look elsewhere – a development that could force them to rethink their left-back strategy entirely.
The writing seems to be on the wall for Junior Firpo at Leeds United. Although talks over a new contract are ongoing, it’s become clear that the Dominican full-back is weighing up offers from across Europe. Rumours link him with Barcelona, Lazio, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid – a list no player could ignore.
Back in 2021, Firpo’s switch from Camp Nou to Elland Road for £13 million was hailed as a statement signing. Yet inconsistent form and injury setbacks have hampered his impact. In my opinion, a fresh start at a big-name club could benefit both player and Leeds, who would free up funds to reinvest in younger talents like Bueno.
Premier League sides such as Crystal Palace and Everton are also said to be monitoring Firpo’s situation. If he departs, Leeds must act swiftly to secure their alternative targets. With uncertainty hanging over Firpo’s future, the race for Hugo Bueno could quickly become top priority for Farke’s recruitment drive.
