Leeds United might yet have their pursuit of one summer signing halted by former Arsenal and Man United man Robin van Persie.
The rivalry between Leeds United and Man United will be back on the big screen next season. Leeds United have been promoted to the Premier League and they’ll be taking on some of the world’s biggest teams under Daniel Farke.
Before the 2025/26 season begins though, Leeds United need some new signings. The Whites have a huge summer transfer window coming up and there’s no shortage of players linked, or of new players being linked.
One position that looks set to need bolstering is at left-back. Junior Firpo looks increasingly likely to leave Leeds United when his contract expires at the end of the season and that’ll leave Farke will nobody to play in that position, with Sam Byram also out of contract.
Robin van Persie’s Feyenoord want to re-sign Leeds United target Hugo Bueno
One potential name who could replace Firpo and Byram at Elland Road is Hugo Bueno. On loan at Feyenoord from Wolves, the 22-year-old Spaniard has featured 18 times in the Eredivisie for Robin van Persie’s side this season, assisting three times.
Leeds United are interested in signing Bueno this summer. But so too is van Persie’s Feyenoord, and it seems like they could soon have the upper hand with journalist Valentijn Driessen suggesting that van Persie is handing Bueno more minutes than any other player in that position, in a bid to tempt him and Wolves into another loan deal next season.
Driessen said on De Telegraaf’s Kick Off podcast: “Maybe it’s to convince Bueno to stay [his recent involvement]. They can rent him for another year if necessary. If he only sits on the bench, it won’t work.”
Feyenoord aren’t the only team rivalling Leeds United for Hugo Bueno
Driessen’s comments seem to suggest that Feyenoord are certainly looking, internally, at another deal for Bueno next season, with this current campaign drawing to an end in both the Premier League and the Eredivisie.
But Wolves hold all the cards still. They’re not exactly in a position to be loaning out good players, and we know Bueno is good because Barcelona are also interested in a summer deal for the full-back.
Speaking to Leeds United News earlier in the year, Wolves expert Rosie Tudball said of Bueno: “Barcelona are reportedly linked, which opens the door to a possible big-money move, Wolves now know that the Spaniard can cut it amongst the best, given his Champions League experience, which could, in turn, prompt them to bolster his price tag.”
Bueno remains under contract until 2028 and so Wolves really don’t need to sell this summer. They could keep him about and watch his price tag rise, especially if he can return and perform for them in the Premier League.
