Leeds United could land the bargain of the summer if they can pull off a deal for this soon-to-be free agent.
Expect Leeds United to make very good use of the free and loan markets this summer, as Daniel Farke looks to ready his side for an ever-challenging Premier League campaign.
All the talk has been about how much they’ll spend, and sure, Leeds will no doubt spend their share of money. It’s already been revealed that Leeds United have a £100million transfer kitty for this summer.
But given some of the names being linked; the £25million-rated James McAtee and the £40million-rated Caoimhin Kelleher among others, Farke will definitely need to find some bargains to ensure he can bolster sufficiently this summer.
There’s no end of players coming to the ends of their contracts in the Premier League and on the continent too. But one name linked with a move to Elland Road is Kyle Walker-Peters, who former Saints boss Russell Martin described as a ‘really top player’.
Leeds United have made contact over Kyle Walker-Peters deal
Leeds United are linked with Walker-Peters who is soon to become a free agent at Southampton. The former England right-back looks like one of many set to leave St Mary’s and there are clubs already queuing up to sign the 28-year-old full-back, who can play on both the left and right side.
Recent reports revealed that Fulham planned to open talks with Walker-Peters but the uncertainty surrounding manager Marco Silva has seemingly put the Cottagers well back in the race to sign Walker-Peters.
Speaking to Leeds United News, transfer expert Graeme Bailey has issued the latest on Walker-Peters’ situation, saying: “I’m told no decision just yet. Leeds have had contact, but as we know they’re one of many clubs to be in touch with him. West Ham, Spurs, Everton… there’s loads. And some foreign clubs are lurking too. Can Leeds get him? Of course. But from what I can make out it’s going to be tough.”
Leeds United face uphill battle to sign another full-back target
Even before the summer transfer window has opened we’re already seeing Leeds United face some really stiff competition to sign their reported targets. This could yet be a theme of the summer transfer window.
Not only is Walker-Peters a target for Leeds and many others, but so too is Georgios Vagiannidis. Leeds United have been linked with Vagiannidis at Panathinaikos, but the right-back now has other suitors in the Premier League.
Spurs are interested in signing Vagiannidis and not only him, but McAtee too. Spurs alone could poach Vagiannidis, McAtee and Walker-Peters from Leeds United’s grasp this summer.
Farke needs to act fast in this summer’s transfer window if he’s to stand a chance of signing some top players.
