Junior Firpo remains a key talking point among Leeds United fans going into the summer. Does he stay or does he go?
Leeds United fans have had very mixed feelings about Junior Firpo ever since his 2021 move from Barcelona.
But Firpo is nearing the end of his contract at Elland Road on the back of his best season at the club. If not then certainly his best second half of a season with the club.
Coming back into the fold around New Year, Firpo went on to claim 10 assists and score four goals in 32 Championship games for Daniel Farke’s side, playing a key role in the club’s eventual 1st place finish.
The latest on the situation is that Firpo has been offered a new contract by Leeds United ahead of next season. But the 28-year-old is considering his options with a move to Real Betis being widely speculated.
Barcelona are also interested in re-signing Firpo, per reports, with Everton, West Ham, and Crystal Palace all interested in Firpo ahead of the summer transfer window too.
Harry Toffolo could be the perfect signing for Leeds United this summer
Farke looks set to spend big this summer. It’s been claimed that Leeds United are set to spend £100million on new signings this summer, though some of the names being linked with moves to West Yorkshire could prove very pricey.
It might be that Farke ends up spending the majority of his summer transfer kitty on just a handful of players. That’ll mean that free and loan signings will prove vital for the Whites and one potentially very shrewd signing could be Harry Toffolo.
The former Lincoln City and Huddersfield Town left-back is set to be released by Nottingham Forest this summer. Toffolo, 29, has made 57 total appearances for Forest in his three years with the club, scoring one and assisting four.
Three reasons why Harry Toffolo would be a solid signing for Leeds United
Harry Toffolo would add vital depth for Daniel Farke
The full-back department is looking incredibly light for Leeds right now. Farke might even need to go out and sign three or four of them this summer and with other positions needing additions too, Farke will need to shop around the free agents.
Toffolo is someone with good experience and who’s still at a good age. Likely based around Nottingham and Huddersfield as well, a move to Leeds could make sense for him.
Harry Toffolo can be very creative in the right set up
Forest have never really gotten Toffolo firing in the final third. But with both Huddersfield and Lincoln he was a key source of creativity with 28 assists in 184 total games for the two teams combined.
Like with Firpo and Jayden Bogle, Farke could be the man to get Toffolo back to his best in terms of assists, whilst giving Leeds United another creative outlet on the flank.
Harry Toffolo has a lot of time for Leeds United
The chance to stay in the Premier League and fight for a starting spot at Leeds United could be very appealing as it is. Toffolo though is already someone who has a lot of admiration for Leeds United. At least he did during the Marcelo Bielsa years.
Speaking back in 2020, he said of the side after Leeds’ 2-0 win over his Huddersfield Town side: “I thought Leeds were exceptional. I thought the movement of the players was the best I’ve come across in the league so far. It’s one of them. You’ve got to hold your hands up to good play.”
The Elland Road faithful and the atmosphere is always a pull for players too.
