Leeds United could soon have their first striker signing of the summer, with a handful expected from Daniel Farke’s side.
Despite Joel Piroe winning the Golden Boot in 2024/25, Leeds United’s current striker options make for very worrying reading.
Daniel Farke has just Piroe and Mateo Joseph at his disposal with Patrick Bamford looking like he could leave Leeds United after seven years with the club.
And there’s no shortage of strikers being linked with possible moves to Elland Road. It’s been reported that Leeds United are interested in Everton striker Beto, whilst Jamie Vardy has also been linked.
Now though, one striker who Leeds United were linked with in January has now been mentioned alongside the Whites once again: Willem Geubbels.
Leeds United wanted to sign Geubbels in January but the 23-year-old Frenchman remained with Swiss side St Gallen, where he’s scored 13 in 30 league games this season.
Leeds United and Ipswich Town looking at Willem Geubbels
It’s now being reported that Leeds United and Ipswich Town are weighing up summer bids for Geubbels. German outlet, Berliner Kurier, has revealed how Union Berlin have already tabled a bid for Geubbels and how the club are readying another offer, expected to be worth €6million (£5million).
And the same outlet goes on to reveal how ‘English clubs are also bidding’ for the striker, including Leeds United and Ipswich Town; the latter have just been relegated to the Championship whilst Leeds United have been promoted to the Premier League.
Speaking on his future, Geubbels is quoted by Berliner Kurier as saying: “My contract runs until 2027. Let’s see what happens. Offers? At the moment, I don’t know exactly what I’m really interested in. If there are offers, we’ll discuss it.”
Farke and Leeds United will spend £100million on new signings this summer and so Geubbels looks like he would be well within the Whites’ transfer budget at £5million.
What was previously said about Leeds United signing Willem Geubbels
At age 16, Geubbels cost a staggering £16million. Monaco signed him from Lyon but he’s had a bit of a journey since then, only now starting to fulfil his potential playing out in Switzerland.
Now he’s got a number of clubs in England and Europe wanting to sign him but how much he’ll eventually cost remains to be seen. This apparent £5million price tag seems very low for a player with such potential, but it could be just a starting point.
Back in January though, it was claimed that Leeds United were not interested in signing Geubbels and that links at the time were wide of the mark. Whether that’s changed now remains to be seen.
But it’s another name for Leeds United fans to keep an eye on this summer, no doubt.
