If Leeds United are to spend big on new reinforcements this summer, then the club will also have to sell a few players in order to remain compliant with Profit & Sustainability Rules.
The Whites continue to be linked with new names every week. Just this week, Leeds have been touted with moves for West Ham’s departing Vladimir Coufal and Liverpool’s Konstantinos Tsimikas.
LeedsUnited.News has also been told of interest in Galatasaray midfielder Gabriel Sara, though a move would prove difficult considering his current club. But to spend big, Leeds will also have to sell players.
There are a few candidates that could depart, with Leeds identifying Pascal Struijk and Willy Gnonto as potential exits if the club require a big PSR boost. Another could be striker Mateo Joseph this summer.
Real Betis planning Leeds talks for Mateo Joseph this month
Like Struijk and Gnonto, Joseph was signed as an unknown by Victor Orta during his teenage years and has gone on to break into the first team. A positive of Orta’s reign was identifying youngsters early.
Last summer, Joseph looked like he was ready for a breakthrough season – scoring goals against Schalke, Hannover and Valencia in pre-season. But he finished the 2024-25 campaign with a tally of three goals.
Betis made a £10m bid for Joseph in January, which was rejected. Betis’ interest in Joseph remains with Leeds setting a price tag of £12.75m for a player Brenden Aaronson says has a “huge future” in the game.
Now, Mundo Betis deliver an update. They say the La Liga side plan to immediately enter talks with Leeds to sign Joseph when their season ends on May 28, after the Conference League final against Chelsea.
What Mateo Joseph has said about his future at Leeds United
In Joseph’s position, any normal player might be worried about his game time after promotion. Having not been a starter for the majority of the season in the Championship, surely he will struggle at the top.
Leeds are expected to bring in a new striker this summer with the likes of Everton’s Beto, Newcastle United veteran Callum Wilson and plenty of others linked. But Joseph is confident of getting game time.
He said: “It’s not been the best season on the pitch. If we get promoted, it will be good for everyone (interview before promotion). I know that next season will be better than this one, definitely individually.”
It will be interesting to see what Joseph does if Betis do come calling again. Pellegrini’s side will have money to spend, especially if they beat Chelsea in the Conference League final on May 28.
