Leeds United’s squad faces a clear need for fresh additions in central midfield this summer. Should Ethan Ampadu remain alongside Joe Rodon at centre-back, the midfield unit would be left thin.
Many observers believe Ampadu has proven himself more effective in defence than Pascal Struijk, forming a robust “Welsh Wall” with Rodon. However, that defensive pairing would further deplete midfield resources.
With Josuha Guilavogui almost certainly departing Elland Road and Joe Rothwell available only on loan, the club’s options in the centre are limited. Though Aidy White wants Rothwell to stay, his long-term future remains uncertain.
The emergency acquisition of Guilavogui earlier this season underlined the shortage of depth in central areas. Injuries to Ilia Gruev and Ampadu forced the club into a last-minute solution, highlighting the urgent requirement for reinforcements.
Leeds United Eye Anthony Dennis
One of the names linked with a move to Leeds is 20-year-old Nigerian midfielder Anthony Dennis, currently plying his trade with Göztepe in the Turkish Super Lig. Reports emerging from Africa suggest that Leeds have opened negotiations for his signature.
Sources indicate a fee of around £4.2 million would be necessary to secure Dennis’s services. European interest extends beyond Elland Road, with Germany’s St. Pauli, France’s Rennes and Brighton & Hove Albion all monitoring the player.
Agent Keeps Doors Open
Dennis’s representative, Eddie Bonsu, has confirmed that talks are ongoing. Speaking to Africa Foot, he remarked: “He’s a high-quality player, so it’s no surprise he’s attracting attention from major leagues. We’re approaching everything with caution to ensure the best outcome for Anthony.”
“When it comes to his destination next season, we’ll evaluate all options. Ultimately, all parties should be satisfied,” Bunso added.
Progress and Recognition
In March, Dennis earned his first call-up to the Nigerian national squad, although he did not make the matchday bench in fixtures against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. His inclusion, however, signals growing esteem at the international level.
Since joining Göztepe from HB Abuja in the summer of 2023, Dennis has amassed nearly 50 senior appearances. While the Turkish top flight has risen in quality, it still represents a step below the Premier League. Initial links to Leeds reportedly began when the club was still in the Championship, suggesting Dennis was viewed as a potential second-tier signing before promotion.
