Why Spurs winning the Europa League is very bad news for Daniel Farke and Leeds United - opinion

Many Leeds United fans might have watched as Spurs beat Man United in the Europa League final on Wednesday. Daniel Farke might have watched too. But Spurs winning may not be good news for the German.

Leeds United have been promoted to the Premier League and next season will pit themselves against both Spurs and Man United, who currently sit in 17th and 16th place of the Premier League table respectively.

Daniel Farke’s side might jump at a possible 16th or 17th place finish next season. But the 49ers will eventually want the club to become much more ambitious than that, and maybe even compete in Europe themselves.

To do that the club will need a strong summer. The summer transfer window opens on June 1st and Leeds United have a number of transfer targets ahead of then. But Farke’s side face stiff competition for almost every linked player, it seems.

As it goes, Spurs are one of the teams who Leeds United seem to be facing competition from in the transfer market, and for several players.

Spurs and Leeds United battling to sign four players including Caoimhin Kelleher

One player linked with both Spurs and Leeds this summer is Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. We recently revealed that Leeds United have held talks to sign Kelleher this summer but Spurs are also keen, with Aston Villa now in the race as well.

James McAtee is another. Leeds United have reignited their interest in McAtee at Man City but recent reports have also revealed that Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs are also interested in McAtee ahead of the summer transfer window.

Meanwhile, Kyle Walker-Peters at Southampton is a target for both clubs too. Leeds United and Spurs are in the race to sign Walker-Peters ahead of his contract expiry at St Mary’s this summer.

Lastly, and another full-back; Georgios Vagiannidis is liked by Leeds United and Spurs. The North London club joined the club soon after Leeds but it was then revealed that Sporting CP have offered a contract to Vagiannidis, and that the Panathinaikos man is keen to make the move.

Spurs now have huge advantage over Leeds United in the transfer market

Stating the obvious; Spurs now have a huge advantage over Leeds United and many others in the summer transfer window because winning the Europa League qualifies them for the 2025/26 Champions League.

For Postecoglou, that’ll prove to be a massive pull when trying to sign players in the summer, and for the likes of maybe Kelleher and McAtee in particular, Spurs may now be a very attractive potential option for them this summer.

Leeds United really have to act fast this summer, or find themselves left behind in the transfer window. Farke though has a great club to sell potential new signings and a lot of money to spend, with reports that Leeds United will spend £100million on new players this summer.
