Leeds United’s Creative Crisis: Why Aaronson Falls Short
Leeds United’s push for Premier League survival hinges on a dynamic playmaker, yet Brenden Aaronson has too often failed to deliver. Despite Leeds racking up 95 Championship goals, Aaronson managed just 11 goal involvements, a return that simply won’t cut it at the top level.
In my view, the USMNT international’s tendency to lose composure in key moments has cost Daniel Farke’s side precious counter-attacking opportunities. Leeds need someone who can make decisive plays under pressure, not a talented but erratic operator.
It’s clear the playmaker role must be overhauled. While Aaronson has his strengths, Leeds cannot afford to compromise on creativity and efficiency when every point is vital in the Premier League. An upgrade in that No.10 position is non-negotiable this summer.
Three Dream Playmakers to Replace Aaronson This Summer
1) Bilal El Khannouss
Leicester City’s rising star is on the market for around £22 million, making him an irresistible option for Leeds. At just 20, El Khannouss combines vision, technique and set-piece prowess in a package that suggests massive upside.
He was among the standout performers at the bottom end of the Premier League table, demonstrating composure and creativity under fire. That experience of fighting relegation could prove invaluable to a newly promoted Leeds side.
Frankly, his flair to unlock defences and his dead-ball expertise would fill two of Leeds’ glaring gaps in one go. In my opinion, signing El Khannouss would be a statement of intent that this team is ready to compete at the highest level.
2) Martin Baturina
Dinamo Zagreb’s midfield dynamo offers tenacity, energy and a remarkable passing range. The Croatian’s ability to operate in tight spaces and spray defence-splitting passes makes him a tantalising alternative to Aaronson’s sometimes wasteful approach.
Links with Leeds have circulated before, and it feels like a match made in heaven. At 22, Baturina would bring both a hunger to prove himself in one of Europe’s top five leagues and the technical quality to hit the Premier League running.
In my view, Baturina’s competitive edge and work rate give him the profile Leeds need in transition moments. If Leeds want a midfield leader who can unlock stubborn defences, he ticks every box.
3) Malik Tillman
PSV Eindhoven’s towering playmaker boasts a rare blend of size, creativity and football IQ. At 6’2″, he combines strength with the technical finesse to pull off unexpected flicks and incisive through balls.
Data shows Tillman ranks among Europe’s elite midfielders for expected goals involvement and dribble success rate. That statistical edge underlines a proven ability to change games – exactly the match-winner Leeds crave.
I genuinely believe Tillman could be the x-factor Farke’s system has been lacking. His knack for big-time moments and physicality in duels would make Aaronson’s role obsolete at Elland Road.
Priority Positions: Building a Premier League-Ready Spine
Beyond the No.10 conundrum, Leeds must address their defensive and goalkeeping frailties. Dominance in the Championship masked weaknesses at both ends, but the Premier League won’t forgive lapses in concentration or unreliable shot-stoppers.
First on the agenda should be a commanding centre-back pairing to anchor the backline and a goalkeeper with proven consistency. Leeds’ recent history is littered with costly errors from the wrong men between the sticks – this summer demands a clear upgrade.
Finally, a classic centre-forward capable of holding up play and bringing others into the game is vital. A No.9 who can relieve pressure, sustain attacks and serve as an outlet will transform Leeds’ transition game and complement the new playmaker beautifully.
In my opinion, prioritising a No.9, a No.10 and a reliable shot-stopper will give Leeds the spine needed for survival and push for midtable respectability. Get those three signings right, and Daniel Farke will finally have the platform to build a Premier League-worthy side.
