Wrexham chief responds to questions about Ryan Reynolds’ side signing Leeds United player

The story of Wrexham has captured football fans across the United Kingdom and far beyond with their progress documented on Disney – and they are being linked with signing a Leeds United player.

Wrexham had spent more than a decade in the National League when British actor and writer Humphrey Ker was tasked with buying a club for actors and now co-owners, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

Since their purchase of Wrexham and the hiring of Phil Parkinson as manager, Wrexham have gone back-to-back-to-back – earning three successive promotions. They are preparing for a Championship season.

As Wrexham have progressed, the club have started to bring in big-name signings. The likes of James McClean, Ben Foster, Jay Rodriguez, Sam Smith and recently, Wrexham were linked with Patrick Bamford.

Humphrey Ker on whether Wrexham are signing Patrick Bamford

Bamford’s future at Leeds is uncertain. The striker has spoken about playing in the Premier League again, but Graham Smyth expects him to leave Leeds. Bamford’s contract at Leeds is set to enter its final year.

Ker appeared on Radio X alongside Leeds United supporter Chris Moyles this week, and in a reel posted on Radio X’s Instagram page, Ker responded when asked if Wrexham could sign Bamford from Leeds.

Moyles asked: “Jamie Vardy?” Kerr replied, “No”. Moyles continued: “Patrick Bamford?”, resulting in the same reply from Ker: “No. I will stop doing this because you might say someone I have to say …yes.

Ker continued: “Wrexham generates clicks and we’re getting linked with absolutely everybody. One of the most fun things about being a fan is speculating transfers. I don’t want to crush everyone’s good time.”

Will Patrick Bamford stay at Leeds, or will he leave Elland Road?

Bamford is out of contract in a year and that means this summer is the last opportunity Leeds have to bring in a fee for the one-time England international. Bamford is also believed to be the highest earner.

But he has failed to show why since Daniel Farke took over at Elland Road. Taking emotion out of it, it makes sense to offload Bamford even if it is for a nominal fee – but perhaps, he has earned a year.

If he does go, Leeds cannot expect any kind of fee that they initially paid Middlesbrough in the summer of 2018. Realistically, Bamford is going to cost a nominal fee if Wrexham or anyone else come knocking.
