Max Wober could only provide a back-up option for Leeds United during the 2024-25 campaign after his controversial return to Elland Road last summer, but now he has broken his social media silence.
To understand Wober’s story, we have to rewind to the moment he joined the club. January 2023 saw Jesse Marsch strike another reunion in the transfer market, after deals for Brenden Aaronson and more.
Leeds spent £10m to sign Wober from Salzburg, but he only managed 20 appearances before Leeds were relegated. That summer, Wober jumped ship to join Gladbach as one of eight to use Victor Orta’s clause.
Wober chose to go on loan to Gladbach to cement his Euro 2024 place, before returning to Leeds in the summer. He was one of two to make the controversial return, along with USA international Aaronson.
Max Wober posts on Instagram for first time since Leeds return
While Aaronson started 44 of 46 Championship games and featured in all of them, Wober only managed nine appearances during 2024-25 – though he did come off the bench at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.
Two operations and the form of Pascal Struijk, Ethan Ampadu and Joe Rodon has limited Wober’s game time, often meaning he has played at left-back. He has been an unused sub in 18 Championship matches.
Taking to Instagram, Wober posted for the first time since returning to Leeds: “Champions. This Club is back where it belongs. Thanks to this amazing group, the staff and the unbelievable support of the fans.”

Where does Max Wober’s future lie as Leeds win promotion?
Realistically, with the Leeds players receiving a Premier League wage rise, Wober is going to be one of the club’s top earners. That may tempt Wober to remain, even with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon.
However, Wober is expected to leave Leeds with The 49ers likely to want to a sale of Wober. He is far too expensive a player to be sitting on the bench, unless he can prove he can start throughout pre-season.
But as things stand, Wober is likely to generate interest not least from old clubs Salzburg and Gladbach this summer. Leeds will surely want to sell him, but it could be up to Wober whether he does opt to go.
