Premier League football means a massive increase in revenue and The 49ers plan to use a lot of it on redeveloping Elland Road.
In the weeks after the promotion was sealed, plans have taken a significant step forward and here is everything we know so far on the Elland Road redevelopment plans.
What do Leeds United want to do with Elland Road?
Leeds are planning on significantly expanding Elland Road’s capacity, as well as redeveloping the stadium and surrounding areas to improve the match day experience.
To achieve this, new tiers, a new roof and new internal spaces are all planned for the West Stand, with the north-west corner of the ground set to be demolished and then replaced.
It’s added that the aim is for the West Stand to be ‘similar in scale’ to the existing East Stand.
Plans for the North Stand are not yet finalised but a new tier is expected.
Elland Road Plans green-lit by Leeds City Council
The plans took a massive step forward in the wake of Leeds securing promotion back to the Premier League.
On April 23, 2025, Leeds City Council announced that they had agreed to enter negotiations with the club to sell council-owned land immediately surrounding the stadium to facilitate the expansion.
Leeds City Council’s executive board has just unanimously agreed the ambitious regeneration vision to make newly-promoted@LUFC’s Elland Road stadium one of the biggest in the country.
The council have also entered a memorandum of understanding with United to collaborate with the club’s development partner, Lowy Family Group, to regenerate the council-owned land around Elland Road.
Who is building the new Elland Road?
KSS are the architects designing and overseeing the Elland Road facelift. The company were behind Liverpool’s recent main stand expansion and also designed Leicester City’s new training ground.
Elland Road’s new capacity
Leeds plan to expand Elland Road’s capacity from 37,792 to around 53,000.
As reported by The Athletic, this will see the West Stand expanded from 8,000 to 17,750 and the North Stand from 10,401 to 15,300.
When will work on Elland Road start and finish?
According to The Athletic, construction plans will get underway with advanced site works as early as September 2025.
However, it’s reported that work on constructing the new-look West Stand is not expected to begin until May 2026 and won’t be completed until late 2028.
Plans for the North Stand redevelopment have not yet been finalised and work isn’t expected to be finished on that until 2030.
Leeds hope they won’t see a drop in capacity during development by using this phased approach.
How much will it cost Leeds to redevelop Elland Road?
It is not yet clear how much the development work will cost the club, but it seems clear that staying in the Premier League to earn its significant revenues will be a necessity.
